The Missouri River is Bismarck’s Greatest Asset.

The Missouri River is also Bismarck’s Greatest Opportunity.

A differentiator for Bismarck and North Dakota.

The Missouri River is of immeasurable value to Bismarck and greater North Dakota. The river provides abundant recreational opportunities and a clean source of drinking water. It is also a source of water for agricultural and industrial uses. As a cultural resource, it is the inception point of our recorded history and our shared regional heritage. And it and has always been a breath-taking backdrop for Central North Dakota.

The Missouri River is an incredible asset for the region, however an abundance of unrealized potential still exists.  Previous planning surveys demonstrate interest in improved public river access options.  Existing commercial uses appear isolated and may not provide a cohesive visitor experience.  Interpretive waterfront stopovers constructed ahead of the Centennial Celebration of the Lewis & Clark Expedition may be in need of reimagining.  Additionally, there is a lack of programmable open space along the riverfront for special events, such as farmer’s markets, concerts, weddings, and other community-building experiences.

In early 2022, several local partners, including the Fort Abraham Lincoln Foundation, applied for and were awarded a planning grant from the North Dakota Department of Commerce, Tourism Division. The grant award was combined with a 10% local match from the City of Bismarck. The purpose of the grant was to explore ways to bolster tourism in Bismarck along the Missouri River. Tourism is North Dakota’s third largest industry, bringing nearly 22 million visitors to the state each year and contributing $3 billion in visitor spending to the state’s economy. The vision for this masterplan is to bolster the state and local economy through tourism, while improving the Missouri River’s appeal to both locals and visitors alike.
